Project Matrix
Looking at my body of work in a CV is one way to make sense of my skills and experience, but looking at it from a different angle might provide a better overview of what has always driven my career: research, community, culture, and creativity.
Check out some key projects I’ve worked on below:
Projects
Night Terrors Run Crew
Founder
The Night Terrors Run Crew (NTRC) is an independent international running group based in Toronto, CA and Los Angeles, USA. I founded this group in 2013 as one of the first prominent female crew founders during the second wave of running culture and together we have attracted partnerships with global fitness brands such as Nike and Adidas.
The NTRC meet up several days a week for an inclusive and free community run, initially hitting the urban streets at night and has since grown to include cross-country and trail running during the day. For more, click here.
The Voice of Domestic Workers
Volunteer Tutor in Media and Communications
The Voice of Domestic Workers (VODW) is a non-profit organisation that advocates for justice for migrant domestic workers (MDWs) based in the UK. Partnered with Unite the Union, the UK's largest union, the VODW provides support services such as legal and employment advice, healthcare, education and counselling for MDWs.
For 2+ years, I’ve worked as a volunteer tutor for the VODW and hold weekly workshops with members to help the group develop social media skills and share their stories online through their website and monthly newsletter. Additionally, I help the organisation with their social media campaigns and have recently assisted them with their petition campaign for visa reform to end modern day slavery. Follow the VODW on Facebook here.
RAID
Freelance Web Design
RAID (Rights and Accountability in Development) is a UK-based NGO that works to expose human rights abuses and corruption perpetrated by corporations and seek redress for those harmed. Recently, RAID has helped local communities bring legal actions in the UK for killings and assaults at mines owned by multinational companies.
To accompany RAID's reporting of Zakaria Nyamakomo's story and his experience of abuse at the mine, I worked on the front end development of www.raid-uk.org/zakariasstory, creating a multi-media experience that accompanied the text, built using RAID’s Drupal-based back-end. Read Zakaria's story here.
STOP THE TRAFFIK
Head of Communications
STOP THE TRAFFIK (STT) is a UK-based charity that uses an intelligence and data-informed approach to prevent human trafficking and modern slavery. On top of working on prevention strategies, STT produces resources and awareness campaigns targeting vulnerable communities, such as migrant domestic workers, agricultural labourers, and asylum seekers, that have reached millions worldwide.
As STT's Head of Communications overseeing a team of 5+ members, I shaped the vision for my department to facilitate and scale STT’s internal departmental strategy and goals through digital content direction, production, and execution in order to deliver intelligence-led prevention. Additionally, I lead on STT’s brand voice, partnership comms responsibilities, and PR and media efforts. Follow STT’s journey through their LinkedIn here.
Writing
The start of my career began at MuchMusic, Canada's MTV, working as a writer for the muchmusic.com website, writing 2,000+ articles over three years about culture and entertainment for a youth audience. This job prepared me for writing with a specific tone of voice for a specific audience.
I've also been published in The New Jock and FLARE Magazine. Writing most recently for my MA in Media and Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London has allowed me to critically explore topics such as social media activism, environmental derivatives, power and press freedom in the Philippines, and more. “The Cloud as Metaphor: The Environmental Impact of the UN’s Cloud Infrastructure in the Context of Power” Dissertation
MA Media and Communications Student
In the context of anthropogenic climate change, in this dissertation I investigated what the United Nations’ data centres can reveal about the impact of ‘the cloud’ on the environment and crucially, the long-term implications of cloud technology.
Using an interdisciplinary approach that draws from media studies, technology, and international relations, the dissertation explores the way in which powerful interests lie behind, and are served by, the cloud,, materialising the devastating effects that are hidden by the uncomplicating metaphor of ‘the cloud’. Read it here.
Pinyata
Head of Product Marketing
Pinyata was a startup mobile app and social network that allowed users to connect and share pictures and videos (and share “Stories” before Instagram Stories). Launched in 2014, our aim was to compete with Instagram. We succeeded in getting press coverage and trended on the Apple App Store.
As the “Head of Product Marketing”, on a small team I was a lot of things, but I’m most proud of the work we did using qualitative and quantitative research on our audience, engaging with them directly, understanding what they sought from the app, and learning about the Pinyata experience through their eyes. Engaging directly with our audience allowed us to understand the needs of the community and gave me invaluable experience in building an online presence
Beautycon Media
Head of Social Media
Beautycon was a media company and community for Gen Z and Millennial content creators, fans, and brands celebrating inclusive and diverse beauty and culture. With 500k+ followers across all channels, Beautycon provided unique opportunities to push digital culture forward.
While Beautycon provided a visually rich media-based experience, behind the scenes my role involved a lot of critical research. I conducted qualitative research on social media audiences and developed social media profiles of Beautycon followers to guide content creation.
